Local information for Delray Beach Florida

Beautiful Delray Beach Florida is located north of Miami in Palm Beach County along the Atlantic seaboard. The population is just over 70,000 and consists of a diverse mixture of cultures and peoples from many parts of the Western Hemisphere. Nestled between Boca Raton on the north and Boynton Beach on the south, Delray Beach has become one of the more prominent communities in the South Florida region, maintaining a high quality of living in a relatively quiet, almost small town atmosphere.

The origin of the name "Delray" comes from the turn of the 20th century, while communities had existed in the area before, new arrivals from the North re-christened the city "Delray" after a small community located in Detroit, Michigan. The name "Del Ray" is Spanish for "of the king" which certainly seems appropriate for this coastal community.

While begun as a farming community, Delray Beach now derives most of its income from tourism and related industries as well as real estate which is highly valued in this part of Florida. A host of good restaurants, nightclubs and a wealth of art galleries dot the city and have helped to shape the surroundings.

Although there are plenty of wonderful attractions and things to do in Delray Beach, certainly the most attractive reason to settle into this fine community has been the warm climate that pervades year round. The beautiful beaches, tropical sunshine and consistently warm climate with an average high temperature of 83 degrees from January to December has certainly brought in plenty of people over the years to take advantage of the sunshine and warm weather and many affordable homes for rent in Delray Beach

The real estate market in Delray Beach has undergone some changes over the past decade as the changing economic times have now created a large market for affordable, high quality homes in the area. Such conditions are, of course, transitory and may soon pass. But as of this writing the real estate market in Delray Beach is open to new opportunities and lower prices of houses for rent in Delray Beach than existed only a few years before.

Besides the beautiful beaches which attract many tourist year round, Delray Beach is primarily known for it's attention to the art community, making one of the more cultured attractions in South Florida.

For more than 20 years the Downtown Delray Beach Arts District has been featuring galleries of paintings and other artwork along with cultural organizations in South Florida, making it a year-round attraction along Atlantic Avenue and connecting streets. A popular street fair known as The Delray Affair takes place annually to promote the arts of the surrounding communities. For food lovers there is the Delray Beach Garlic Fest which features three days of food, music and art along the Old School Square, this festival is held every February.

For tennis lovers, the annual Delray Beach International Tennis Team Championships are held at the Delray Beach Tennis Center. Delray Beach is considered one of the top tennis towns in the United States. Delray Beach Florida combines a small town atmosphere with a lively arts heritage that makes it one of the jewels of South Florida.
