While Daytona Beach was first formally discovered in 1513 by Ponce de Leon, it was Matthias Day who officially became the founding father of the area. In 1874 its first hotel was built and it has grown dramatically ever since. While the city may be flooded with over 200,000 visitors for the Daytona 500 race, it does feature plenty of attractions year round for the entire family. They include the Coke Zero 400 NASCAR race, Bike Week which takes place in early March each year and Biketoberfest which happens near Halloween.
