While Daytona Beach was first formally discovered in 1513 by Ponce de Leon, it was Matthias Day who officially became the founding father of the area. In 1874 its first hotel was built and it has grown dramatically ever since. With the building of the World Center of Racing, Daytona International Speedway in 1959, the area created an anchor which would draw millions of people each year. Currently, the Daytona Beach area draws approximately 8 million visitors a year to it's world famous beaches and attractions. A hotel built in 1871 by Mathias Day, Jr. helped to found the city which was named after him and it was incorporated in 1876. By the 1920s the Florida Land Boom helped name Daytona Beach the "World's Most Famous Beach".

The warm, semi-tropical climate is comfortable year-round with only occasional freezes that do not happen often. While the city may be flooded with over 200,000 visitors for the Daytona 500 race, it does feature plenty of attractions year round for the entire family. They include the Coke Zero 400 NASCAR race, Bike Week which takes place in early March each year and Biketoberfest which happens near Halloween. As you can see, bicycles play an important role in Daytona Beach's activities, but there is far more to do in this city. Next to NASCAR, perhaps the biggest event in Daytona Beach is the annual Spring Break in March which attracts college age students from around the country.
